Bowel sounds (sometimes called abdominal sounds) are caused by the intestines moving around as they push food through the digestive system. As a result of the hollow nature of the intestines, bowel sounds travel through the body like water echoes in a pipe.
Bowel noises are usually fine. They are merely indicators of a healthy digestive system. By placing the stethoscope to the abdomen, a doctor can listen for any abnormalities (auscultation).
