For metal studs, the manufacturer suggests using 1-1/4′′ No. 8-18 by 3/8′′ HD Hi-Lo S or S-12 ribbed Phil wafer head, self-drilling, corrosion-resistant screws with a No. 8-18 by 3/8′′ HD Hi-Lo S or S-12 length. If these don’t work, you could use galvanised 1-1/4′′ roofing screws instead.
When you’re done, the screw head will be flush with the board if you used the right screws. These screws are strong enough to cut through the material to make this work. If you use the wrong screws, the screws will probably stick out of the finished product, or you will have to countersink the holes to make them flush. So, just use the right screws and save yourself the trouble.
With fasteners approved by ICC-ES ESR-2290 and spaced according to the wind load tables, Hardie Plan lap siding can be used. Fasteners must not rust, be galvanised, or be made of stainless steel.
