The national anthem is only performed at international matches in the majority of the rest of the world. For example, the national anthem would be played before a football match between England and Brazil but not before a match between Celtic and Benfica, despite the fact that both of those clubs are from different countries.

Marc Ferris told USA TODAY Sports that national anthems are inherently political statements. The title of his book is “The Star-Spangled Banner: The Unlikely Story of America’s National Anthem,” and he wrote it. He also knows the history of how our national anthem, which was written during a time of war, became a part of our country’s sports culture.

It makes little sense to play the national anthem before a domestic game, given that it is traditionally reserved for international competitions.

According to Marc Ferris, author of the book Star-Spangled Banner: The Unlikely Story of America’s National Anthem, we have to go back to 1862 to find traces of a “Star-Spangled Banner” played during a sporting event. “But it’s hard for me to believe it hasn’t been played before.”

Composed during the War of 1812 by Francis Scott Key, a lawyer taken prisoner by the British in 1814, the tune did not become the official anthem until 1931. But it already enjoyed strong popularity compared to other patriotic songs in vogue in the 19th century, such as “Yankee Doodle” or “Hail, Columbia”. “Star-Spangled Banner is a great song, very positive. The people took it over. We were extremely patriotic at that time. The war ended in 1814, we were ready to go west and grow.”

In September 1918, the “Star Spangled Banner” was taken up by more than 10,000 people attending the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs, in Chicago. Germany was on the verge of surrender and patriotism was at its height in the United States. An attack on an official building in Chicago, which left four dead and 75 injured, added to the emotion.
