    The tragic death of Cavelier de la Salle

    On March 19, 1687, René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle was killed by one of his companions after an expedition in the Mississippi region.

    Five years earlier, on April 9, 1682, he had taken possession of this immense territory in the heart of North America and baptized it Louisiana. Back in France, he had immediately expressed the desire to set out again in exploration.
