Ceftriaxone and calcium have been tested in two in vitro studies, one with plasma from an adult and the other with plasma from umbilical cord blood from a newborn. Ceftriaxone concentrations of up to 1 mM were used with calcium concentrations of up to 12 mM (48 mg/dL), which were higher than the concentrations reached in vivo after 2 grammes of ceftriaxone were infused over 30 minutes. With calcium levels of 6 mM (24 mg/dL) or higher in adult plasma or 4 mM (16 mg/dL) or higher in neonatal plasma, it was harder to get ceftriaxone out of the blood. This could be because of the way ceftriaxone and calcium mix together.
