What’s the point of motor oil?
The main things that motor oil does are to reduce friction and wear, but it also has other important jobs to do in your engine. To get a better idea of what motor oil does, you need to know why it’s used, the different ways it lubricates, and what kinds of things need to be lubricated.

1. As much as possible, reduce wear and friction.
The most common and important job of motor oil is to reduce wear and friction between parts. Lubricants coat metal with a thin layer of oil to cut down on friction. Reduced friction keeps the surface from getting hot and wearing down, like engine bearings.

Motor oil’s other main job is to keep the parts of the engine clean. Motor oil keeps the inside of the car clean by suspending dirt and grime in the fluid and stopping them from sticking to parts. Base oils have different levels of solubility, which helps keep things clean inside. The ability of a fluid to dissolve a solid, liquid, or gas is called its solubility.
Even though the oil’s ability to dissolve is important, detergents and dispersants are more important. Additives like detergents keep dirt and grime from sticking to parts, especially hot parts like pistons or piston rings.
Dispersants are additives that keep pollutants from sinking to the bottom of a fluid. Dispersants work like solvents to keep the oil clean and stop sludge from forming.
3. Interesting engine components
Less friction means less heat in moving parts, which makes the equipment run at a lower temperature overall. Lubricants also pick up heat from surfaces that touch and move it to a place where it can be safely spread out, like the oil sump. Most of the time, the viscosity of the base oil determines how well it transfers heat. Lighter oils tend to do this better.
4. Make a seal
In places like the combustion chamber, motor oil acts as a moving seal. It helps seal the piston rings against the cylinder wall so hot exhaust gases don’t get into the oil and gets the most compression out of the engine. A good seal also keeps oil out of the combustion chamber, which cuts down on the amount of oil used.
5. Reduce shock
Motor oil’s other main job is to soften the blow of mechanical shock. A strong lubricant film can resist breaking and can absorb and spread these energy spikes over a large contact area. When mechanical shocks to parts are reduced, wear and damaging forces are also reduced. This makes the parts last longer. A great place to see how motor oil dampens shock is in the transmission of a motorcycle. If the oil loses its thickness and can’t make a strong, thick film on the gears, it can make the gears shift loudly and clunkily. No rider wants that to happen.
6. Keep corrosion at bay
A lubricant must be able to stop or slow down the corrosion of internal parts. To do this, the oil either changes the chemical properties of corrosive substances or puts a barrier between the parts and the corrosive substance. If rust or corrosion does happen, contaminants can flake off and get into the oil, where they move through the system and wear down metal bearings and other parts.
7. Energy transfer
Since lubricants can’t be squashed, they can be used to transfer energy, like in hydraulic equipment or the valve lifters in an engine. In many newer engines with variable-valve-timing systems, the motor oil is also used as a hydraulic fluid to move parts. To do this job well, it’s important that the oil stays clean and maintains its thickness.
