WHITE IS DEEMED TO BE THE COLOR OF MOURNING

Although black is the colour most commonly associated with mourning in both Europe and North America, white has always played an important part in the process of expressing sympathy and condolences. In most cases, spotless white shirts are worn with suits, and white flowers are typically used for funeral arrangements. When mourning the passing of a loved one during the Middle Ages, people often wore black and white together.

At funerals, Buddhists traditionally dress in all white as a sign of grief and respect for the person who has passed away. For Buddhists, white is the traditional colour of mourning because of their belief that the first three days after a death should be a period of positivity to help the departed make a smooth transition from life to death.

On most continents besides North America, white is the colour most commonly associated with funerals. As a sign of reverence and chastity, the majority of people who attend Hindu funerals wear this colour. In a similar way, white is often associated with funerals in some Asian cultures, especially China and Korea.
