When the moon seems orange, this is because the atmosphere is filtering off shorter wavelengths of light, which causes it to appear orange.
Why Does the Moon Have Such a Reddish Color?
Have you ever come across the theory that cheese constitutes the moon’s composition? It was presumably perceived as a humorous idea at the time. If, on the other hand, you’ve witnessed the Moon in a variety of colours, you could begin to think that the whole “made of cheese” idea has some basis in reality. As an illustration, the moon’s colour can shift from white to yellow to even orange at certain periods. Other times, it appears white. If it were made of cheese, the distinct colours could be explained by different kinds of cheese: mozzarella for white, American for yellow, and cheddar for orange!
The full moon that happens in late summer is called the “orange moon,” the “harvest moon,” or the “hunter’s moon.”
