What is ringworm?
Ringworm, also known as dermatophytosis, a dermatophyte infection or ringworm, is a fungal infection of the skin.
“Ringworm” is a misnomer because a fungus, not a worm, causes an infection. The lesion caused by this infection looks like a ring-shaped worm – hence its name.
Ringworm is commonly used to describe tinea corporis (ringworm of the body), although it can sometimes be used to describe a ringworm infection elsewhere, such as tinea cruris (ringworm of the groin).
Lichen infection can affect both humans and animals. The infection initially appears as red spots on the affected parts of the skin and can later spread to other parts of the body. It can affect the scalp, feet, nails, groin, chin or other areas.
Lichen Symptom Recognition
Symptoms vary depending on where you are infected. With a skin infection, you may experience the following:
red, itchy, or scaly patches or raised areas of skin called plaques
patches that develop blisters or pustules
spots that may be redder or ring-shaped on the outer edges
patches with defined and raised edges
If you have dermatophytosis on your nails, they may thicken or change color or they may start to crack. This is called dermatophyte onychomycosis or tinea unguium. Causes of lichen
Three different types of fungi can cause ringworm: Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton. It is possible that these fungi live a long time as spores in the soil. Humans and animals can be infected with worms after direct contact with this soil.
Infection can also be spread through contact with infected animals or humans. The infection usually spreads among children and shares objects that warm them.
Different types of fungi cause ringworm. Doctors call ringworm different names, depending on where it affects the body:
Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) often begins with isolated skin on the scalp that develops into itchy and scaly skin. It is more common in children.
Ringworm of the body (tinea corporis) often appears as spots with a characteristic round ring shape.
Itchy hand (tinea cruris) refers to a worm infection of the skin around the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. It occurs most often in men and adolescents.
Athletic foot (tinea pedis) is a common name for a worm foot infection. It is often seen in people standing barefoot in public places where the infection can spread, such as locker rooms, showers, and swimming pools.
