Artists do a lot of different things, but no matter what medium they use or what style they try, they all have the same goal: to make art. Art that is beautiful, art that is political, art that is simple, art that makes you think, art that is expressive, and art that is difficult to understand.

No one would argue against the idea that art from a specific era or region can shed light on a previously unknown culture. However, there are times when the artist’s personal experiences shine through the work more than the culture at large. Some works of art seem to capture the essence of the human condition. On other occasions, it’s purely an aesthetic preference, a treat, an occasional indulgence. Art can both capture the stunning complexity of nature and make ugly, raw statements that are challenging and uncomfortable to the viewer.
