In the early 1940s, Hagrid was a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This happened around the same time that Tom Riddle, who would become Lord Voldemort, was going to school. Hagrid was busy taking care of his first dangerous pet, an Acromantula he named Aragog, while Riddle was having fun in the empty Chamber of Secrets.
Why is it against the rules for Hagrid to do magic?
There are a lot of mysterious people in Harry Potter’s world, and many of them go to great lengths to keep dark secrets and shady pasts hidden. Hagrid, who teaches at Hogwarts about how to take care of magical creatures, is one of these people. Even though he was always on Harry’s good side and stayed one of his most loyal friends, the Keeper of the Keys was not allowed by law to use magic. What was the reason for this strange kind of bias?
Hagrid was promoted from Hogwarts gamekeeper to Care of Magical Creatures teacher, even though he wasn’t allowed to use magic like everyone else. This was because Dumbledore never lost faith in him. He stayed involved in the wizarding world, and at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he had a big part to play in the Battle of Hogwarts. Since he eventually meets Albus Severus, Harry’s son, it’s clear that he kept his job for a long time, but he still wasn’t supposed to use magic, even though he helped a lot. Why?
Many people in the magical world looked down on creatures that were part human and called them insulting names like “half-breeds.” Hagrid was half-giant because he was born to a wizard and a giantess. He was raised by his father because his mother left when he was three to be with her giant relatives. Even though he never met the giant side of his family, the fact that he was half-giant made many people look down on him.
This was clear in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, where Dolores Umbridge hates Hagrid openly because he is half-human and half-giant. Since he was a child, Hagrid has had to deal with people looking down on him. In fact, this bias against him was a big reason why the well-known character lost the ability to do magic decades ago.
